Solar Tracker Farm in North America Operates with Unique, Decentralized Design

At the time of commissioning, the South Burlington Solar Farm located in South Burlington, Vermont, was the largest decentralized solar tracker farm located in North America. AllEarth Renewables, the tracker manufacturer and EPC contractor, wanted to design a solar farm that maximized reliability and production. This unique 2.13 MW solar farm operates using a decentralized design, and utilizes state-of-the-art wireless communications technology to provide power to Vermont’s feed-in-tariff program.

About The Farm

The 25-acre solar farm is comprised of more than 9,000 panels, 382 SMA Sunny Boy 6000-US string inverters and AllEarth Renewables AllSun Series 24 dual-axis trackers. Each array is composed of 12 modules per circuit on a dual-axis tracked ground mount. Each top pole mounted sub-array has its own dedicated MPPT input to help optimize performance, tracking the movement of the sun. This system can produce up to 45 percent more electricity than a fixed, roof mounted PV system of the same size.

“The decentralized design and innovative wireless technology of this solar farm result in a more efficient, reliable performance with minimal power loss. Our goal is to produce more energy with this type of system than other utility-scale solar plants so we can achieve maximum power output.” – David Blittersdorf, President and CEO of AllEarth Renewables

Advanced Wireless Communications

Communications equipment from the site is housed in one central location and includes a high-speed modem and central radio. The AllEarth Renewable advanced communications system allows for power, energy and voltage, and wind speed reporting from each AllSun Tracker. This wireless technology even allowed for the Vermont governor to commission the project using an iPhone.
