A market study by NYU and Yale professors suggests rooftop solar is contagious and that homeowners are more likely to go solar if someone in the neighborhood has installed a system. This study, “Peer Effects in the Diffusion of Solar Photovoltaic Panels,” found that on an average California street with at least one solar installation, a one-percent increase in the street’s installed base leads to a more than nine-percent increase in the number of solar homes on that street.

Strategic Neighborhood Marketing

Using a lawn sign is a cost effective tool to increase installer awareness.

Installers can use strategic marketing materials to maximize this opportunity. When you install a system, consider placing a sign on the customer’s lawn to promote your business. Lawn signs generate awareness among residents and drivers passing by, which will ultimately result in additional leads from the neighborhood. Make sure people in the community know to call you when they’re ready to install their own system.

Door hangers are another way to introduce your business to the neighborhood of a customer. Materials like this, which leave an educational message at the fingertips of potential customers, can help you position yourself as the solar authority in your community.
