How to Incorporate Modbus Energy Meters Into Energy Management With SMA Data Manager M

Holistic energy monitoring for photovoltaics, diesel gensets, hydropower, CHP & Co.: This tech tip shows how to incorporate a Modbus TCP energy meter into your system with SMA Data Manager M powered by ennexOS.

In the Sunny Portal powered by ennexOS, other energy sources can be integrated into the monitoring in addition to photovoltaics. The energy balance also visualizes diesel gensets, hydro power plants and combined heat and power plants (CHP). How do you insert a Modbus TCP counter into a system with Data Manager M to record measured values? In a tech tip, Jan Rössler, technical trainer at the Solar Academy, explains how you can easily incorporate different Modbus energy meters into your energy management system with Data Manager M powered by ennexOS. Some energy meters have already been pre-configured in Data Manager M. For other energy meters, you can create a dedicated profile in just a few short steps. The video explains exactly how to do this.

What is Modbus TCP?

Modbus TCP is a worldwide, freely available communication standard for measurement and control systems. Devices from different manufacturers can exchange data with each other via Modbus TCP. TCP stands for Transmission Control Protocol. It defines the way in which data is exchanged between the individual network components. TCP is part of the Internet protocol family, the basis of the Internet, and is therefore also called TCP/IP. Modbus TCP/IP communicates via Ethernet. By contrast, Modbus RTU, for example, communicates via RS485.
